Her’s to lose?

A month ago, the perennial swing state of Ohio was slipping away from Hillary Clinton as she struggled to win over working class whites and impress jaded millennials. Today, Ohio looks more and more like hers to lose. The story of why Clinton is now on such firm footing in the state heading into the final month of the race, with early voting set to begin in tomorrow, is about Donald Trump.

Trump’s “pivot”

In the spring, the word “pivot” became a prevailing part of Donald Trump’s narrative. He was on his second campaign manager, who assured fellow Republicans that Trump would morph into the general election candidate conservatives needed to beat Hillary Clinton. If Trump has pivoted, it was in the opposite direction than many had hoped, and Republican leaders are getting exhausted.

North Carolina emergency

New flooding in the wake of Hurricane Matthew has prompted President Obama to declare a federal emergency in North Carolina. At least four rivers in the state have risen to above or near record levels. The massive storm killed at least 27 people across the Southeast.

Cholera fears

The toll from Hurricane Matthew in Haiti continues to climb, as at least 1,000 people have been reported dead. More than a million people are in need of aid, and there are fears the flooding will help a cholera outbreak spread fast. We visit the decimated town of Jeremie, that took a direct hit from Matthew.

Trapped in Aleppo

A relentless campaign of bombing and shelling has left hundreds dead and many others wounded in the sprawling Syrian city of Aleppo. As Bashar Assad’s troops and their allies push closer, wounded civilians trapped in the city wait for international diplomacy to grant them a safe path out, but that seems an ever more distant prospect.

“Locker room talk”

Professional athletes are slamming Donald Trump’s dismissal of his degrading 2005 comments toward women as “locker room talk.” Many athletes say they now feel compelled to speak up, arguing that Trump’s comments in his own defense were out of bounds.

Storm-battered businesses

Hurricane Matthew is done battering the Southeast, but the bruising it inflicted on small businesses there will hurt for a long time. The damage they sustained could be fatal in many cases, especially if their insurance claims get denied for any of several reasons.
