Thanksgiving White House fence jumper to be arraigned Friday
The man who jumped a fence at the White House on Thanksgiving, 22-year-old Joseph Caputo, will appear in D.C. Superior Court Friday afternoon.
According to the U.S. Secret Service, Caputo is likely to face an initial charge of unlawful entry initially, though that may change.
Caputo, who is from Stamford, Connecticut, took a binder with him when he jumped the fence, and he dropped some papers on the North Lawn of the White House. All of this material had to be swept by the Secret Service as a cautionary measure.
The White House was put under lockdown for three hours on Thanksgiving, after Caputo, draped in an American flag hopped over the White House fence at approximately 2:45pm, knelt down on the lawn and put his hands up. He was immediately apprehended by the Secret Service and taken into custody. Caputo was unarmed.
The Thanksgiving Day incident, the latest in a string of fence-jumping episodes, follows recent attempts by the Secret Service and National Park Service to enhance security measures around the presidential mansion.
In May, the White House added a second layer of steel "anti-climb" spikes to the top of the White House fence to discourage such breeches.
President Obama and his family were spending Thanksgiving at the White House, according to his public schedule.
