Deadly bedroom shooting of teen boy headed to grand jury

SPRING, Texas - A Harris County grand jury will decide whether a Houston-area father will face charges for fatally shooting a teenage boy he found in his daughter's bedroom early Thursday, reports CBS affiliate KHOU.

Detectives say the man's 16-year-old daughter let the 17-year-old boy, identified as Johran McCormick, into her family's home in Spring, Texas, and sneaked him into her bedroom, but when her father walked in and questioned who the boy was, she said she didn't know.

An argument reportedly ensued between McCormick and the father, whose name hasn't been released.

The father told police he opened fire on McCormick after McCormick dropped his hands as if to grab something. He died at the scene.

"I would like my baby back, but I know that's not possible," Zakia McCormick, the teen's mother, told KHOU. "...He didn't deserve to die like that."

Following the incident, the father was transported to a nearby hospital after he complained that he wasn't feeling well. The Houston Chronicle reports the man had symptoms of a panic attack. Authorities reportedly said the man appeared to be on several medications.

Neighbors of the family were torn on what the father did.

"As a mom, I just can't imagine," Leticia Field told KHOU. "I know the dad was trying to protect the family, but he should have let the authorities handle it."

The family recently moved to the house from a nearby neighborhood.
