Takata air bag recall could more than double

DETROIT - Three people briefed on the matter say that U.S. auto safety regulators are in talks with Takata Corp. to add tens of millions of air bag inflators to what's already the biggest auto recall in American history.

The people say the government wants the Japanese company to issue a recall that could more than double the 28.8 million Takata inflators that already must be replaced. They requested anonymity because talks are still under way. An announcement could come as soon as Wednesday.

Neither the government nor Takata would say if more recalls are coming.

The defect, which can cause air bags to explode and fire off shrapnel, led to the massive recall in the U.S. There have been 10 known deaths in this country and 11 worldwide. More than 100 people have been injured.

In November, U.S. auto safety regulators announced a fine of up to $200 million for the Japan-based company -- $70 million for mishandling the way it recalled the millions of air bag inflaters and an additional $130 million if its settlement with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is violated.

NHTSA has created some online resources to help consumers whose vehicle may have a defective air bag made by Takata.

The NHTSA has set up a website dedicated to the Takata recalls:http://www.safercar.gov/rs/takata/index.html. The NHTSA says the website will contain regular updates, recall lists, and information on the status of the Takata recalls and its investigation.
