Suspect in custody after SWAT standoff near San Diego airport

San Diego police in standoff with active shooter

SAN DIEGO -- An hours-long standoff involving SWAT personnel and a man suspected of shooting at police officers has come to an end, according to the San Diego Police Department, which says the suspect is in custody.

Officials say 33-year-old Titus Colbert surrendered to police after a more than five-hour standoff Wednesday, and no injuries were reported.

San Diego Police Lt. Scott Wahl says Colbert threw "multiple weapons" out the window of a rooftop apartment before being taken into custody.

The Federal Aviation Administration halted incoming flights at San Diego International Airport for several hours as a precaution because planes swoop low near the apartment complex before landing.

Earlier in the day, planes that were already en route were held or diverted, the FAA said.

CBS affiliate KFMB reports that police officers initially responded to a domestic violence incident, which was reported around 9:15 a.m. local time in the city's Bankers Hill neighborhood.

When they arrived, a suspect, reportedly armed with a high powered rifle, opened fire on a K-9 unit from an apartment and continued to fire shots at police. After that, officers gassed the apartment that the suspect was in, according to police.

Officers were seen crouched behind squad cars and using nearby buildings for shielding, reports KFMB.

The San Diego Police Department had advised nearby residents to shelter in place, and according to the San Diego police Twitter feed, Washington Elementary School and City Tree Christian School were placed on lockdown, as a precautionary measure.

The woman involved in the domestic violence situation is safe and was with police, KFMB reported.
