Suspect's girlfriend charged in N.C. nurse's shooting death
CARY, N.C. - Police have arrested the girlfriend of a man who they say fatally shot a home health care nurse outside an apartment complex in North Carolina, reports CBS affiliate WRAL.
Jessica Renee Parrisher, 28, was arrested Wednesday for allegedly lying to authorities investigating the death of 58-year-old Wendy Johnson in Cary, N.C., according to an arrest warrant obtained by WRAL. Parrisher has been charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.
WRAL reports 36-year-old Daniel Scott Remington allegedly shot and killed Johnson around 11 p.m. on Aug. 22 in the parking lot of the Hyde Park Apartments, located less than two miles from the suspect's home. He was arrested Saturday in Fayetteville and is currently facing a murder charge.
A search warrant that was made public Wednesday reveals Johnson, of Sanford, N.C., was in Cary to visit one of her patients, and was getting out of her car when a man approached her, shooting the victim after she refused to give up her purse.
The station reports several people called 911 after the shooting to report hearing a woman screaming for help in the parking lot. One caller reported that Johnson had been shot in the back. The victim was taken to Duke University Hospital in Durham, where she was pronounced dead.
On Tuesday, a man at Remington's apartment, who identified himself as Parrisher's father, told the station that the suspect returned to his apartment briefly on the night of the incident to gather some belongings. Parrisher's father said neither he nor his daughter knew about the crime and that she gave police information that helped lead to Remington's arrest.
However, the arrest warrant states Parrisher "knowingly provid(ed) false statements to Cary police detectives... regarding Daniel Scott Remington Jr.'s admission... that he had committed the felony of first-degree murder," according to WRAL.
Investigators said in a search warrant that Remington told police he shot Johnson when she tried to stop him from stealing her purse.
The station reports authorities got permission to search the suspect's 2013 Chevrolet Impala - as well as the victim's vehicle - and seized clothing, a pair of tennis shoes, a small box of ammunition, blood swabs and other items.
Remington is currently being held without bond in the Wake County jail, reports WRAL. Parrisher is jailed on a $100,000 bond.
Johnson's funeral is scheduled to be held at New Hope Baptist Church in Sanford.
