Sunday: Tim Kaine, Kellyanne Conway, Reince Priebus, John Lewis
With just over seven weeks to go before Election Day, the race between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump has tightened to a razor-thin margin. What are both campaigns doing to pull ahead in the final stretch? We’ll ask them Sunday on Face the Nation.
We’ll talk with the Democratic vice presidential nominee, Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, about the Democrats’ strategy in the coming weeks. Does he think the questions about Clinton’s health and transparency are taking a toll? How are he and Clinton preparing for the debates? And what can they do to close the deal by November?
We’ll also talk with Donald Trump’s campaign manager, Kellyanne Conway. Can the GOP nominee can get away from the controversies and build an affirmative case for his candidacy in these final few weeks. And what does Conway make of the recent flap over Trump’s role in the “birther” movement?
We’ll talk with Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus about how he’s feeling about the GOP’s chances in November. Is he encouraged by the state of the race? And is he worried Trump will squash his momentum with another inflammatory remark?
Taking a step back from politics, we’ll visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which is set to open in Washington, D.C. later this month, for an interview with civil rights pioneer and Georgia Rep. John Lewis. We’ll ask the congressman what the opening of this latest Smithsonian institution means to him – and what it says about our country.
Ahead of the pivotal presidential and vice presidential debates, we’ll talk with two veteran political operatives who have helped prepare candidates for these events in the past – Democratic strategist and CNN Senior Political Commentator David Axelrod, a former senior advisor to President Obama, and Lanhee Chen, a research fellow at the Hoover Institution and the former policy director of Mitt Romney’s 2012 campaign. What should the candidates – and the voters – expect from these face-offs?
As always, we’ll convene an expert political panel to break down the busy news week. This week’s panelists include Washington Post columnist Ruth Marcus, the New York Times Magazine’s Mark Leibovich, and Reihan Salam of the National Review and National Review Institute.
