Student charged with second-degree murder in No. Ariz. campus shooting

Deadly shooting at Northern Arizona University

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Police at Northern Arizona University have filed a formal complaint charging a freshman with second-degree murder in a campus shooting.

Steven Jones initially was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Colin Brough following a fight Friday. Police wrote in a complaint released Wednesday, changing the charge to second-degree, that Jones didn't act with premeditation.

The complaint also expands the number of assault charges against the 18-year-old Jones from three to six -- two for each of three other students who were injured in the shooting.

Jones' attorney, Burges McCowan, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

Funeral services for Brough are scheduled Friday in Annapolis, Maryland, where he attended high school and played lacrosse. The 20-year-old Brough graduated from Castle Rock High School in Castle Rock, Colorado, in 2013.
