Stars voice support for Hillary Clinton at Hollywood Film Awards
Several actors voiced their support for Hillary Clinton at the Hollywood Film Awards, presented by Virginia Black, on Sunday.
Host James Corden set the tone when he said, “This year they brought back ‘Star Wars’ with a female lead. They rebooted ‘Ghostbusters’ with a female cast. And I pray to God they reboot the Clinton presidency with a female lead.”
Robert De Niro was perhaps the most vocal supporter for Clinton on stage.
“We have the opportunity to prevent a comedy from turning into a tragedy,” he said. “Vote for Hillary Tuesday.”
Other celebrities were more subtle.
Leonardo DiCaprio called out both Clinton and Donald Trump for not talking enough about climate change and added, “Vote for people who believe in the science of climate change.”
But Fisher Stevens, DiCaprio’s partner on the film “Before the Flood,” which took home the Hollywood Documentary Award, made his message clear: “On Tuesday, let’s dump Trump,” he said.
Natalie Portman didn’t explicitly state her support for Clinton, but she talked about discrimination toward women during her acceptance speech for her role in “Jackie” as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, alluding to Clinton’s time as First Lady.
“We have obviously heard so many crazy things that have been said about women this year politically. And to women,” she said. “I feel so lucky to be part of this film that is about a woman who was known first for being a wife. First to Kennedy, then to Onassis. But then really became someone who could be recognized on their own merits ... She’s not to be respected because of her relationship to a man.”
