Ex-Stanford swimmer Brock Turner's full statement to court
PALO ALTO -- In Brock Turner's statement to a California court, the former Stanford University swimmer who was convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman apologized to his victim, but blamed his behavior on alcohol and the "college lifestyle."
CBS News has obtained Turner's full statement. Turner is serving a six-month jail sentence for three counts of sexual assault, but can be released in as soon as three months. He faced a maximum of 14 years in jail and Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky's sentence has led to widespread outcry and a campaign to recall him.
Letters from both the victim and Turner's father have already been made public. The young woman Turner assaulted told the court she should not be viewed as "a drunk victim discarded behind a dumpster" nor should the scales of justice be tipped in favor of "the all-American swimmer."
Turner's father argued that a "culture of alcohol consumption" at Stanford was to blame.
