South Carolina police officer shot, wounded during standoff

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Authorities say a South Carolina police officer was saved by his bulletproof vest during a shooting, reports CBS affiliate WCSC.

The North Charleston Police Department says the officer, Wayne Pavlischek, was transported to the hospital following the Monday evening incident. The man who allegedly wounded Pavlischek was also shot and brought to a hospital, officials said.

Pavlischek and other officers had responded to a 4:33 p.m. call from a person who said the suspect was speeding back and forth in a white vehicle, possibly trying to run over a pedestrian.

Police say when officers arrived at the scene, they secured a perimeter around a home where the vehicle was parked. They say the suspect soon appeared in a second-story window of the house and fired multiple shots at officers.

Pavlischek was struck on the right side of the abdomen, officials said. The suspect then exited the front door and allegedly continue to fire at officers, who returned fire, injuring him.

Pavlishek's injuries were described as minor. Officials have not commented on the suspect's condition.
