Son kills elderly mother at assisted living center in N.J., police say
VOORHEES, N.J. -- Police say a man shot and killed his elderly mother before turning the gun on himself at an assisted living rehabilitation center in southern New Jersey.
The shooting happened around 6 p.m. Sunday at Genesis HealthCare Voorhees Center in Voorhees.
Police say a man in his 60s was visiting his mother, believed to be in her 80s. They say the man shot and killed her before shooting and killing himself.
CBS Philadelphia reports that employees tell police they heard a gunshot. When a nurse's aide entered the room, the mother was dead and they witnessed the son shoot himself.
Nobody else was hurt. No names have been released.
Police are continuing to investigate the murder-suicide.
The facility is home to patients receiving short- and long-term care and those receiving cardiac management, dementia and Alzheimer's care.
