Social reaction to "Nuestro Amigo: Latinos for Trump"
On Thursday, CBS News aired a CBSN Originals documentary on a number of Latino voters who vocally support Donald Trump. Men and women, baby boomers and millennials, they are different in many ways, but they share two things in common. Residing in Texas' border towns, the Mexican-Americans featured in "Nuestro Amigo: Latinos for Trump" all live on the front lines of the immigration debate, and they all agree with the tough stance Donald Trump has taken on border security.
Not surprisingly, social media reaction to their story was immediate.
Many social media users chimed in that they themselves know Latino voters who feel the same way.
While the Mexican-Americans featured in "Nuestro Amigo" are undoubtedly a minority among Latinos, a recent Fox News Latino Poll shows that Latinos who support Trump now represent nearly a quarter of the demographic.
Trump, however, remains a highly controversial figure with no shortage of critics online.
As Forbes' Ellen McGirt wrote Friday, the point is that: "No voter bloc is monolithic, as this excellent CBS News mini-documentary points out. To find pro-Trump Hispanic voters, they turned to people who live along border towns in Texas. Because the issues associated with illegal immigration--drugs, violence, and other crimes, chiefly--loom large in their lives, many find his blunt talk reassuring. He's speaking to their truth."
