Suspect sought after shooting near MIT campus

BOSTON - A woman was shot in the leg near the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Cambridge campus on Sunday and the shooter is on the loose, Cambridge Police told CBS News.

A post on the school's emergency website said authorities were continuing to search the area but that the suspect was not believed to be on campus.

A spokesperson for MIT Public Safety told CBS News an all clear was issued on the campus. Cambridge police, however, were asking the campus to remain on alert.

It is unclear whether the victim - who is reported to be 25 years old - is a student at the school. According to CBS Boston, the victim's injuries are not life-threatening.

The station reports the shooting did not occur on campus and that an active shooter alert was sent by the school in error.

In a tweet, MIT police said: "Active Shooter reported on campus. Police responding. Evacuate if able or seek shelter. Lock and barricade doors. More to follow."
