Sheriff: Indiana mom calls 911, confesses to killing kids, 7 and 3

DARLINGTON, Ind. -- A central Indiana woman killed her two young children and then stabbed herself in the neck a day after her husband filed for divorce, a sheriff said Thursday.

Brandi Worley, 30, of Darlington, confessed in a “matter-of-fact” demeanor to the killings in a 911 call about 4:30 a.m., said Montgomery County Sheriff Mark Casteel. Casteel said the woman didn’t appear to show remorse on the call, reports CBS affiliate WTTV.

A deputy found 7-year-old Tyler Worley and 3-year-old Charlie Worley dead in a bedroom, Casteel said. No information has been released on how they died. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

According to the sheriff, the children’s father, Jason Worley, was asleep in the basement, unaware of what was happening in the home about 40 miles northwest of Indianapolis.

“I can’t imagine the pain or the grief that these families are feeling,” Casteel said during a news conference, struggling to hold back tears. “Please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers.”

A hospital is treating Worley for injuries to her neck.

The sheriff’s department had not been called to the home before, Casteel said. Online court records show Worley has no prior criminal history. Worley’s husband had asked her for a divorce earlier in the week, family told WTTV. Divorce papers were filed in Montgomery County on Wednesday.

Yellow police tape surrounded the home Thursday morning. Deputies were seen removing items from a minivan in the driveway.

Tyler was a first grade student at Sugar Creek Elementary, and Charlie was enrolled in preschool. A support team of administrators, counselors, the school resource officers and teachers were providing counseling for students, North Montgomery Community Schools Superintendent Colleen Moran said in an email to parents.

Darlington resident Sunshine Tipton told WLFI-TV she was shocked when she heard the news Thursday morning.

“I have a 12-year-old. I let her play all the time, and I’m the kind of mom that I am worried all the time,” she said. “But Darlington is a wonderful town - and for something like this to happen is just very unusual.”
