Shailene Woodley calls "Twilight" relationship "unhealthy, toxic"

Shailene Woodley is about to be front and center in "Divergent," but just because she's the star of one popular book-to-film adaptation (or three, if you count last year's "The Spectacular Now" and this summer's upcoming "The Fault In Our Stars") doesn't mean she's a fan of all of them.

In a new interview, the 22-year-old actress called out "Twilight" in particular, criticizing the hit series for its portrayal of the romance between Bella Swan and Edward Cullen (played in the movies by Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson).

"'Twilight,' I'm sorry, is about a very unhealthy, toxic relationship," Woodley told Teen Vogue in its April issue. "She falls in love with this guy and the second he leaves her, her life is over and she's going to kill herself! What message are we sending to young people? That is not going to help this world evolve."

Speaking about "Divergent," Woodley shared that she initially turned down the opportunity to play Tris, but reconsidered after turning to another female star at the center of a blockbuster series.

"I asked Jennifer Lawrence, 'Are you happy with your choice to take on 'The Hunger Games'? And she said she wouldn't change it for the world. She told me, 'There are some things -- don't make a sex tape, don't do drugs, don't do things in public -- that you wouldn't want other people judging you for. But this is the best decision you'll ever make.'"

"Divergent" opens in theaters on March 21.

The April issue of Teen Vogue hits newsstands on March 25. For more from Woodley's interview, head to the magazine's website.
