Sen. Ted Cruz uses 45th birthday to fundraise

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, turned 45 years old on Tuesday and the GOP presidential candidate is using the special occasion to fundraise.

On Monday, his wife Heidi blasted out an email to supporters asking them to sign a personalized birthday card for her husband.

"As you know, Ted has been hard at work on the campaign trail -- traveling all across the country, making hundreds of phone calls each day, and listening to voters," she wrote. "But, to win, he needs to hear from you -- I know a personal birthday message from you would absolutely make his day."

The email then says, "in honor of his 45th birthday -- chip in $45 to help him become the 45th President of the United States."

The National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) has also pushed out emails to GOP voters asking them to sign a digital birthday card for Cruz, according to Politico.

In October, Cruz's campaign had announced that it had raised $26.5 million since he launched his bid in March.

Cruz's poll numbers have been rising in recent weeks, especially in Iowa. A Quinnipiac University survey released Tuesday found 24 percent of GOP voters nationally support Cruz for president, just 4 percentage points behind Donald Trump.
