Sen. Claire McCaskill says she has breast cancer

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Missouri, announced Monday that she has breast cancer.

"I very recently learned that I have breast cancer. It was detected through a regular mammogram. It's a little scary, but my prognosis is good and I expect a full recovery," McCaskill wrote on her Tumblr page.

She said that she would return home to St. Louis for three weeks to return treatment, but her staff will keep her office running. She also pledged to post on her Senate website - and enter into the Congressional record - how she would have voted on any bills that come before the Senate, and to submit questions for any hearings she missed.

McCaskill was first elected to the Senate in 2006 after serving as Missouri's auditor and a member of the state's House of Representatives. She was reelected in 2012 and has done extensive work to combat military sexual assault.
