Scott Walker hesitates on backing Donald Trump
Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker joins the recent host of prominent Republican politicians calling on Donald Trump, the party's presumptive nominee, to retract his attacks on a Hispanic federal judge.
In a Tuesday interview with Madison, Wisconsin's ABC News affiliate, Walker said he would withhold an endorsement until after the Republican convention in Cleveland this summer.
"He's not yet the nominee," the governor said. "Officially that won't happen until the middle of July, and so for me that's kind of the time frame."
Walker pointed to the recent controversy surrounding Trump's comments against U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who is overseeing the lawsuits against Trump University in San Diego.
"In particular, I want to make sure that he renounces what he says -- at least in regards to this judge," Walker said.
The Wisconsin governor, who dropped out of the primary race in 2015, previously promised to support the eventual GOP nominee and signed the Republican party's non-binding loyalty pledge last year.
Trump, meanwhile, shows no signs that he's preparing to apologize for his race-based complaints about Curiel, whom he accused of bias. The judge is "very strongly pro-Mexican," Trump claimed.
In an interview with Fox News set to air Wednesday night, Trump acknowledged that "there's a lot of anger" among Republicans over his comments.
"They can't get over it," Trump said. "So they have to get over it, ideally. As to whether or not they endorse me? It's OK if they don't. But they have to get over it. They shouldn't be so angry for so long."
