Russian soldier suspected of killing Armenian family

Armenian unrest around Russian consulate

YEREVAN, Armenia -- Police in Armenia have clashed with protesters demanding the handover of a Russian soldier suspected of murdering a family to Armenian authorities.

A crowd of about 2,000 protesters attempted to break through a police line to get into the Russian Consulate building in the city of Gyumri. Local news sources said Thursday that four people, including three police officers who were hit with stones, remained in the hospital with serious injuries.

Armenian officials suspect the soldier, Valery Permyakov, of shooting a family of six dead at their home Gyumri early Monday. Russian soldiers captured him on Tuesday but it is not clear if they will hand him over to Armenia. So far, Russia, Armenia's main sponsor and ally, has only offered condolences and assistance in the investigation.
