Rose McGowan strikes back at critic who questioned Renee Zellweger's face

When Variety's Owen Gleiberman took Renee Zellweger to task for her changing appearance last week, criticism of his essay was swift and severe, with many leveling charges of sexism at the film critic.

And now, Rose McGowan has added her voice to the chorus of criticism.

Variety published Gleiberman's piece -- titled "Renee Zellweger: If She No Longer Looks Like Herself Has She Become a Different Actress?" -- on June 30, and on Wednesday McGowan struck back on Zellweger's behalf with a column in the Hollywood Reporter.

"Owen Gleiberman, this is not a counterpoint. There is no counterpoint, there is no defense for the indefensible," she wrote, calling Gleiberman's comments "vile, damaging, stupid and cruel."

"How dare you bully a woman who has done nothing but try to entertain people like you. Her crime, according to you, is growing older in a way you don't approve of," McGowan wrote. "You are an active endorser of what is tantamount to harassment and abuse of actresses and women."

To prove her point, McGowan went on to take paragraphs from Gleiberman's essay and switch the genders so that they were about male actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Johnny Depp and others instead of Zellweger to highlight the double standard pervasive in Hollywood.
