Roman Catholic cardinal arrested for DUI in Hawaii

KAILUA-KONA, HAWAII -- A retired Roman Catholic cardinal has been arrested on Hawaii's Big Island for allegedly driving under the influence, reports CBS affiliate KGMB.

Police said Cardinal William Joseph Levada was seen weaving in and out of traffic before being pulled over late on Thursday night Aug. 20 in Kailua-Kona.

Levada was charged with driving under the influence and released after posting $500 bail.

Levada previously has served as archbishop of San Francisco and Portland. Between May 2005 and June 2012, he served as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith under Pope Benedict XVI. During those years, he was the highest-ranking American in the Roman Catholic church.

Levada resigned the post in 2012.

Levada is now Prefect Emeritus of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and an Archbishop Emeritus of San Francisco. He lives on the grounds of St. Patrick Seminary south of San Francisco.

In a statement to KGMB, Levada admitted to an error in judgment and said he'd cooperate with police.
