Reuters: Hackers have also targeted Donald Trump, GOP organizations

Hackers targeted the computer systems of Donald Trump and GOP organizations, according to a Reuters report.

An insider on Trump’s campaign and an outside security expert told Reuters that the email account of at least one staff member for Trump was infected with malware last year and sent malicious emails to co-workers, the report said.

As a result, Trump’s presidential campaign hired CrowdStrike, a security firm that is also helping the Democratic National Committee with its investigation into its hacking attacks.

Four sources also told Reuters that U.S. agencies reported about attempts to hack into GOP political organizations over an extended period of time in intelligence bulletins, the report added. It’s unclear, however, how long the attacks lasted for. It’s also unclear if officials believe Russia was also behind the attacks targeting Trump and Republicans.

The report comes after U.S. officials confirmed that the DNC had also been hacked, and they believe that people working for the Russian government were behind it.

The breach might have also been a larger operation than people initially thought, The New York Times reported last week. The Times said that the FBI had expanded its investigation, informing a “long list” of Democratic officials that Russian hackers may have penetrated their personal accounts, including more than 100 party officials and groups like the Democratic Governor’s Association.
