Port Authority: Investigation indicates no shots fired at JFK Airport

NEW YORK -- Reports of shots fired at JFK International Airport in New York City led to confusion and panic on Sunday evening as passengers were evacuated.

Hundreds of passengers were initially evacuated from Terminal 8 at JFK Airport after reports of shots fired. The NYPD told CBS New York that multiple calls started coming in around 8:34 p.m. of reports of shots fired at Terminal 8 of JFK Airport.

However, the Port Authority said in a statement that a preliminary investigation indicates that no shots were fired.

"At this time, no firearm, rounds or shell casings or other evidence of shots fired has been found," said Joe Pentangelo, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department.

A passenger at JFK earlier tweeted, "Panic at jfk theyre closing the gates at security-possible shooter."

Dozens of people were seen leaving the airport following the reported incident.

The NYPD is assisting at the request of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

There is no confirmation of an actual shooter at this time.
