Report: Stabbing at Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va.
PORTSMOUTH, Va. - A Navy service member was stabbed Friday morning near Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va., reports CBS affiliate WTKR.
A search is reportedly in progress for the suspect. The Navy has identified him as Petty Officer 3rd Class Wilbur Harwell. He is described as a white male, weighing approximately 165 pounds with blond hair and blue eyes. He is said to have been wearing tan cargo pants and a white shirt.
The victim in the incident reportedly sustained critical injuries.
WTKR reports the Navy says the stabbing occurred in front of the installation's Navy Exchange. The installation has reportedly been closed to all incoming and outgoing traffic and personnel are being ordered to shelter in place.
A "Code White" alert was issued for the installation, which typically refers to an active shooter in the building. However, in this case, the code refers to a stabbing, not a shooting, reports WTKR.
Portsmouth Police reportedly confirmed that numerous units were responding to the hospital.
