Report: Missing Connecticut couple owes $2.2 million

EASTON, Conn. - A Connecticut couple who reportedly owe more than $2 million haven't been seen since August 4, and police are calling their disappearance "suspicious."

Jeffrey and Jeanette Navin were reported missing on August 7, and two days later police found their car at a commuter lot with the window smashed in, reports CBS affiliate WFSB.

Easton Police Chief Tim Shaw told 48 Hours Crimesider that although there is no indication of foul play "as of yet," and they are actively investigating that as a possibility as they try to locate the couple.

Jeffrey reportedly owns a waste removal company and his wife works as a school library aide.

According to the Hartford Courant, Jeffrey Navin, 55, has been involved in a long-running court battle over the mortgage on a house in Guilford, Conn. The house was foreclosed on in 2007 and Navin reportedly owes $2.2 million on it.

In addition, the paper reports that last year Navin and a co-defendant were ordered to pay a little more than $138,000 to a utility company, although Navin appealed the decision.

The Navin family issued a statement questioning whether money problems were involved in Jeffrey and Jeannette's disappearance: "Financial issues recently reported by the media have not been proven to be a factor for our family members' disappearance. Information from the authorities indicates that there are available funds still in their bank accounts that are untouched."

Police are asking for anyone who has seen the couple since Aug. 4 to call the Easton police at 203-268-4111.
