Report: After manhunt, arrest in N.C. courthouse shooting

NASHVILLE, N.C. -- After a manhunt, a gunman has been taken into custody in the Tuesday morning shooting of two men outside a North Carolina courthouse, reports CBS affiliate WRAL.

Officials had been searching for two suspects after the shooting around 11:5 a.m. at the Nash County Courthouse in Nashville, about 40 miles east of Raleigh. Nash County Sheriff Dick Jenkins said two male victims suffered non-life-threatening wounds. He says one victim ran inside the courthouse and collapsed after being hit in the hand and leg. The other victim ran down the street and was found in a lot with a back wound.

The shooting isn't believed to be a random crime, Jenkins said at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

"They knew each other, I think," Jenkins said of the victims and suspects. "That's just my opinion."

Both men were taken to hospitals, Jenkins said. He didn't release their identities pending notification of family members.

Jenkins said he had no information on how the shooting happened or why. Nashville Police Chief Thomas Bashore said the victims didn't work at the courthouse.

"Any shooting is senseless, this one is more senseless,"Jenkins said. "You wouldn't expect something to happen like that at this place, but it did."

For several hours, a manhunt involving helicopters and dozens of armed officers patrolling a nearby highway was underway for the two men who Jenkins said fled in a light-colored sedan.

The sheriff said he doesn't know if both fired shots. Officers found four or five bullet casings at the scene.

Jenkins didn't release the identity of the man in custody, but said he is believed to be the gunman, WRAL reports.

Nashville is a town of about 5,500 in a heavily agricultural county.
