Cops: Woman fatally stabbed in neck on Chicago transit
CHICAGO -- A woman was fatally stabbed on Chicago's public transit system early Thursday afternoon, police tell Crimesider.
The victim sustained a stab wound to her neck and was pronounced dead on the scene, Officer Bari Lemmon said. She was attacked on the train near 47th Street. Investigators are speaking with a person of interest.
Catherine Hosinski of the Chicago Transit Authority confirmed a report of an attack on the system's Red Line at 12:33, but couldn't provide details about the incident.
A witness told CBS Chicago the victim was sitting across from a man who asked her a question. When the woman responded, he got up and began to stab her, the witness said.
The woman collapsed and the man slit her throat, according to the witness. More details from police weren't immediately available. In a statement, they reportedly referred to the incident as a "domestic stabbing."
The transit authority said via Twitter that trains were bypassing the 47th Street station because of police activity.
