Rand Paul seeks approval to run for White House and Senate in 2016

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., is looking to cover all his bases in 2016.

The junior senator has reportedly asked the leader of the Kentucky Senate for legislation that would allow him to seek reelection to his current seat while simultaneously running a bid for the White House.

"I am working on clarifying an ambiguous state law that Rand Paul believes is unconstitutional if it is interpreted to bar running for re-election to the Senate and for president at the same time," Kentucky Senate Majority Leader Damon Thayor, a Republican, told the Washington Times.

"The purpose of the bill," he explained, "will be to make clear that Rand Paul or anyone in a similar situation in Kentucky can run for both offices in the same year."

Paul, who's made no secret of his presidential ambitions, isn't the first potential White House candidate to seek two offices concurrently. Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., then-Sen. Joe Biden and former Sen. Joe Lieberman all sought reelection while running for vice president.
