More winners of massive Powerball prize come forward
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The holders of one of the three winning tickets from last month's $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot came forward in Florida.
David Kaltschmidt, 55, and Maureen Smith, 70, of Melbourne Beach attended a news conference Wednesday afternoon at the Florida Lottery headquarters in Tallahassee.
They represented a trust that chose to receive the winnings in a one-time, lump-sum payment of over $327 million. The payout would have been more than $528 million if the trust had chosen to collect the prize in installments.
Neither watched the nighttime drawing for the winning numbers, and Kaltschmidt said at a news conference he didn't believe it when he looked at the ticket the next day.
"I checked the ticket, and everything matched up, so I thought she was messing with me," Kaltschmidt said.
Kaltschmidt said that they didn't inform family members until last week that they won.
Kaltschmidt said he would retire from Northrop Grumman Corp., where he's worked as a manufacturing engineer for 34 years. Smith described herself as a homemaker.
The winning ticket was purchased at a Publix grocery store in Melbourne Beach. The other two winning tickets for the Jan. 13 drawing were bought in Munford, Tennessee, and Chino Hills, California.
John and Lisa Robertson of Munford cashed in their ticket last month, also taking a lump sum total of about $327 million. Munford is about 25 miles north of Memphis.
