Poll: Hillary Clinton holds narrow national lead over Donald Trump
With just two months until the election, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton maintains a narrow lead over rival Donald Trump among likely voters nationally, according to a new poll out late Thursday.
A Washington Post/ABC News survey finds Clinton with just a five-point advantage over Trump, 46 percent to the GOP nominee’s 41 percent among likely voters nationwide. Libertarian party nominee Gary Johnson follows the two at 9 percent, and the Green Party candidate Jill Stein at 2 percent.
Among registered voters nationally, Clinton’s lead is slightly larger: Forty-five percent to Trump’s 35 percent -- a slight bump from Clinton’s eight-point edge last month.
The two candidates are solidifying their base of support, the poll found. Seventy-nine percent of Clinton backers say they would “definitely” vote for the Democratic nominee, while 81 percent of Trump supporters say the same of the billionaire.
Still, with less than nine weeks until the general election, the survey also found some warning signs for both campaigns. A majority of voters -- 60 percent -- view both candidates as not honest or trustworthy, and about 3 in 10 voters say they are undecided or might change their mind in the time remaining.
This Washington Post/ABC News poll was conducted Sept. 5-8, 2016 among a random national sample of 1,002 adults, including 642 likely voters. Results have a margin of error of 3.5 points for the full sample, and 4.5 points for likely voters.
