Poll: Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump hold leads in Maryland race
Party front-runners Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump both lead in the state of Maryland, according to a new poll out Thursday.
A Washington Post-University of Maryland survey shows Clinton with a 15-point advantage over Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, 55 percent to 40 percent among likely Democratic voters.
Clinton's support among African Americans, who make up more than a third of the state's Democratic electorate, has buoyed her numbers: she leads among black voters 63 percent to Sanders' 33 percent. Among women, Clinton is also the commanding favorite, with 60 percent of support to the Vermont senator's 35 percent.
For likely Republican primary voters, New York real estate mogul Donald Trump leads with 41 percent of support. Ohio Gov. John Kasich comes in second with 31 percent, while Texas Sen. Ted Cruz trails behind at 22 percent of support.
Considering the survey's sample size of 283 likely Republican voters, however, Trump's 10-point advantage is not statistically significant.
In a general election contest, Clinton would crush Trump by more than double his numbers, according to the survey. The former secretary of state would have 63 percent of support compared to Trump's 28 percent, the poll found.
Maryland, with 95 delegates up for grabs on the Democratic side and 38 delegates for Republicans, is one of five states with their primaries on April 26. Connecticut, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island also hold nominating contests that day.
The Post-U. Maryland poll was conducted between March 30 and April 3 among a sample of 1,503 Maryland adults. The survey has a sample of 329 Democratic likely voters with a margin of error of 5.5 percentage points. The margin of error among likely Republicans is 7.5 percentage points.
