Poll: In Maryland, almost half of GOP voters support Donald Trump ahead of primary

Spokesperson: Trump is not whining, he's winning

Nearly half of Maryland's likely Republican voters support Donald Trump, according to a Monmouth University survey released Wednesday.

The poll found 47 percent back Trump while 27 percent support John Kasich and 19 percent back Ted Cruz. Forty-four percent of Republicans said they are completed decided on their primary choice, 30 percent have a strong preference and 15 percent remain undecided.

Maryland's primary is less than two weeks away on April 26.

Nearly three-quarters of Maryland's Republican voters said they would support Trump in a general election matchup against Hillary Clinton while 11 percent said they would back Clinton and 8 percent said they would vote for an independent candidate. Eighty percent said they would vote for Kasich in a race against Clinton and just over two-thirds would vote for Cruz instead of Clinton.

Trump's strongest area of support is in the eastern part of the state and he also performs well with voters in the western half of the state. He leads by a smaller margin, however, in congressional districts that run along the I-95 corridor between Baltimore and the suburbs of Washington, D.C.

The billionaire businessman said Trump leads among very conservative voters and somewhat conservative voters, though by a smaller margin. He splits the moderate vote, however, with Kasich.

Trump also leads among male voters but has a smaller lead among female voters. He leads among voters without a college degree while Kasich has a slight lead among college graduates.

The poll surveyed 301 Republican voters between April 10 and 12 with a 5.7 percentage point margin of error.
