Police: Suspect in Daytona Beach shooting kills himself

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The suspect in a triple shooting that killed two Bethune-Cookman University students died after hanging himself in his Miami jail cell.

Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood said he learned Saturday afternoon about York Zed Bodden's death, reports the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

"He saved the state the expense," Chitwood said.

Officials said Bodden was arrested Friday in North Miami after fatally shooting Diona McDonald and Timesha "Lisa" Carswell and critically injuring Micah Parham, also a Bethune-Cookman University student, Thursday in a residence at Carolina Club Apartments in Daytona Beach.

CBS affiliate WKMG reports that five people, including Bodden, were inside an apartment in Daytona Beach on Sept. 17, when an argument began over rent money. One of the men saw Bodden with a gun and jumped out a window, Chitwood said.

"During the fight, our witness struggles with this guy for control of the weapon. When our witness loses the fight for the handgun and sees he's about to get shot, he dives out of the window and starts screaming for help," Chitwood said.

Bodden then shot each woman in the head and shot the other man several times, according to police.
