2 persons of interest questioned in Fla. school bus shooting
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Police have questioned two persons of interest in relation to a Thursday afternoon incident in which shots were fired at a school bus in Jacksonville, Fla., injuring two teenage girls in the vehicle, reports CBS affiliate WJAX.
A spokesperson for the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) said Thursday that witnesses reported seeing two men, who looked approximately 18 years old, firing at the bus. One was not wearing a shirt, the spokesperson said.
Duval County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti said about 30 students were on the bus at the time of the shooting. Vitti said the bus driver kept the shooting from being much worse.
"The bus driver, when pulling up to the bus stop, felt that something was wrong and continued to drive," Vitti said. Shots were fired as the bus moved past the stop.
After the shooting, the bus driver drove approximately one-quarter mile "to get to a safe location," the sheriff's office spokesperson said Thursday.
The two victims are at UF Health Jacksonville hospital in fair condition with non-life-threatening injuries.
Family members have identified one of those females as 15-year-old Shakayla Singleton, reports WJAX.
Her father, Forest Singleton, said she was shot in the face, but is OK and is going into surgery.
Shakayla called her parents immediately after the shooting to say she had been shot.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has schedule a news conference for 12:00 p.m. Friday.
