Police: N.Y. girl slashed by masked man on her way to school

NEW YORK -- Police say a man wearing a surgical mask and surgical gloves repeatedly slashed a 16-year-old New York City girl while she was walking to school Wednesday morning, leaving her bloody and in need of surgery, CBS New York reports.

Police say the man attacked the teen from behind, slashing her multiple times in the face, in her throat, and from her ear to her throat, around 8:30 a.m. Thursday, in Queens.

The victim is an exchange student from China who has been in the U.S. for about eight months, according to the station. Police said the suspect did not say anything during the attack.

The scene of the crime -- which was captured on surveillance video -- was about a block away from the girl's home, police told the station.

A box cutter left behind at the scene, police said.

The victim was taken to a hospital after the attack and was treated for non life-threatening wounds, NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said.

CBS New York reported the high school student was out of surgery late Wednesday and was expected to recover.

Police said at first, it was difficult to communicate with the victim, but her friends and family helped translate.

So far, no arrests have been made. Police said they were not able to identify the suspect from the video, which they tracked down and released.

Boyce called the incident "very disturbing."
