Police: Man fakes disappearance to escape child-porn charges

SAVANNAH, Ga. --Authorities say a kayaker reported missing off Georgia's coast is believed to have faked his disappearance to escape a court appearance on child-porn charges.

Savannah-Chatham County police spokesman Sonny Cohrs said Wednesday that 38-year-old Cody Magee was found alive in Oklahoma, after fleeing 1,000 miles to avoid a hearing Monday on child pornography and attempted child molestation charges.

Oklahoma City police Sgt. Gary Knight says an officer pulled Magee over late Tuesday. He says Magee wasn't arrested but was taken to a hospital. Savannah police said in a news release that Magee was "considered a danger to himself."

A Georgia public defender representing Magee didn't immediately return a telephone call.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Anthony Soto says the Coast Guard had searched 2,500 square miles near Tybee Island for Magee.
