Cops: Violent carjack may be linked to escaped murder suspect

VICKSBURG, Miss. -- Authorities are investigating whether a shooting and car theft Sunday is linked to the escape last week of an accused murderer, reports CBS affiliate WJTV.

Vicksburg police say John Thomas, 52, was shot several times Sunday morning. He was found in a parking lot in the small city just east of the Louisiana border and transferred to the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He remains in critical condition.

Thomas' 2014 Honda Accord is missing, and police are considering the possibility that Rafael McCloud, who officials say used a homemade knife to escape from the Warren County Jail on March 2, may be behind the attack.

McCloud is facing a slew of charges related to the June 2015 rape and murder of Sharon Wilson, a 69-year-old woman whose body was discovered on the day of her murder by ghost hunters exploring an abandoned hospital.

The Honda Accord police are searching for has the Mississippi license plate "WBN 305." Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or CrimeStoppers at (601) 355 - 8477. Information can be submitted online at www.p3tips.com.
