Police: Elderly Texas couple found beaten to death
ATASCOCITA, Texas -- An elderly couple was found dead in their suburban Houston home Saturday afternoon and investigators are saying they were beaten to death, according to CBS affiliate KHOU.
After not hearing from the couple for several days, an out-of-town family member called a neighbor -- who went to check up on them in their Atascocita home, according to the station. After finding the front door unlocked, deputies were called in and found Don Rentz, 83, and his 80-year-old wife Rita, dead.
The deputies also found the back door open as well. Investigators say that both victims had been beaten with an unknown object.
"Both of them had been there several days. It appears that they have both suffered from extreme trauma," Detective Ben Beall, of the Harris County Sheriff's Office, told KHOU.
At least one neighbor told the station that she saw the couple last Thursday, but others said that they have not seen the couple for over a week.
Investigators are working the case as a capital murder, but the motive is still unclear. Robbery might be a possibility, investigators told the station, but there is no word on any suspects.
"There were some areas of it that looked like somebody had gone through some of the drawers but at this point we are not even sure what if anything is missing," Beall said.
