Police: Confessions after Nashville couple found dead in closet
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Police say a Nashville couple has confessed to killing a young couple and then hiding their bodies in the apartment the two couples had shared.
Nashville Metro Police told local media outlets Monday that 20-year-old Brandon Griswold and his 21-year-old girlfriend, Whitney Gray, have told investigators that they bludgeoned 24-year-old Preston Claybrooks Jr. and his longtime girlfriend, 23-year-old Alexandra Grubbs, to death while they slept. Police confirmed the victims died of blunt force trauma, reports CBS affiliate WTVF.
Police say a lingering dispute involving heroin use led to the attack in the east Nashville home.
Investigators believe the suspects continued to live in the apartment for days after committing their crimes, with the victims' bodies hidden in a closet until they were found Sunday morning.
WTVF reports Claybrooks' mother went to the apartment on Saturday, and contacted authorities about an odor of decomposition coming from the apartment. Authorities eventually found the bodies in a large closet, reportedly wrapped in separate bedspreads and hidden under junk and debris.
The victims were not immediately identified because the remains were "not recognizable," police told the station.
Griswold, who leased the home, and Gray were wanted for questioning before they were taken into custody Monday. Police learned that they had been spotted with homeless people near a Nashville rail yard, and arrested them nearby, reports the station.
Claybrooks and Grubbs will each face two counts of criminal homicide. It's unclear whether they have attorneys.
