Police call off water search for missing NY college student

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- The Rochester Police Department is calling off the water search for missing college student Max Maisel, but says the investigation will continue, reports CBS affiliate WROC.

Meantime, his family is planning a memorial service according to several reports.

Maisel, 21, of Connecticut, and a third-year student at Rochester Institute of Technology, was last seen leaving an on-campus apartment complex the evening of Feb. 22. Police found his car the following day at Charlotte Pier, according to WROC.

Police, the U.S. Coast Guard and other law enforcement agencies were involved in the more than three-week search, reports the Democrat and Chronicle.

Law enforcement has "exhausted all of our leads pertaining to the water search," an investigator told the local newspaper.

The family issued a statement that said, in part, "The evidence suggests that Max went into the water off the Charlotte pier. Max is not where the evidence suggests he should be."

The statement also gratitude to the searchers.

"They searched when treacherous weather said they shouldn't," the family wrote. "We appreciate their collective effort and the resources that the people of Rochester and Monroe County have devoted to finding Max."

Police say there is no indication of foul play in the disappearance.
