Police: 2 newborns found dead near car lot in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA --Authorities are investigating the deaths of two newborn infants whose bodies were found in a vacant Philadelphia lot, reports CBS Philly.

Police said a 9-year-old and 12-year-old found the newborns' bodies, just before 10:30 a.m. Sunday lying in the grass, not far from a used car dealership in the city's Kensington neighborhood.

The 9-year-old told CBS Philly that at first he didn't realize what he had found.

"That's when I looked right there, and saw two babies and thought it was baby dolls," he said.

He ran home and told his parents what he saw. The child's father told CBS Philly he first checked to make sure his son was right before calling the police.

"I said, 'come on, we've gotta find out what this really about, if they're babies, we've gotta let somebody know,'" said the boy's father.

Authorities were notified and the babies were pronounced dead minutes later by a medical unit.

Police said the babies appeared to be twins and that at least one still had the umbilical cord attached. The medical examiner believes an autopsy was actually performed on the infants before they were left in the lot, but police are not sure who did it, or how the babiess got there.

Authorities said it appeared they had been in the lot for several days.

There was no immediate information about the cause of death.
