Pink Floyd to release new album

Pink Floyd is gearing up to release a new album, according to a tweet from David Gilmour's wife, Polly Samson.

The upcoming set -- the band's first in 20 years -- is expected out in October.

Called "The Endless River," the album stems from Pink Floyd's '90s recording sessions, the same ones that culminated in the group's last studio release, 1994's "The Division Bell." Samson, an author and lyricist, also described the new release as the "swansong" for Rick Wright, the band's keyboard player who died of cancer in 2008 at age 65.

Samson's tweet, though very casual, surprised many fans and is receiving a lot of buzz:

Durga McBroom-Hudson, one of Pink Floyd and Gilmour's back-up singers confirmed the news on Facebook, writing, "The recording did start during The Division Bell sessions (and yes, it was the side project originally titled 'The Big Spliff' that Nick Mason spoke about). Which is why there are Richard Wright tracks on it."

The post continued: "But David and Nick have gone in and done a lot more since then. It was originally to be a completely instrumental recording, but I came in last December and sang on a few tracks. David then expanded on my backing vocals and has done a lead on at least one of them. That's the song you see being worked on in the photo." She went on to emphasize that the new album will consist entirely of unreleased songs."

"The Division Bell," which was mostly written by Gilmour and Wright, reached No. 1 on Billboard's album chart when it came out in 1994. Samson also co-wrote some of the song's lyrics. The album was recently reissued as part of 20th anniversary package.
