Pilot dies in crash at Georgia airshow
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- The pilot of a small plane died during a crash Saturday afternoon at an airshow near Atlanta, CBS affiliate WGCL reported.
Authorities said a stunt plane was performing aerial acrobatics at the Good Neighbor Day Open House Airshow at the DeKalb-Peachtree Airport when it hit the ground. There was only one person aboard the plane.
DeKalb County Public Information Officer Sheira Campbell said the pilot will not be identified until his next of kin are notified. Campbell also said there were no other injuries on the ground and there was no other damage other than the aircraft.
DeKalb County officials told WGCL this was the first accident in 30 years of the PDK Airshow.
A spectator tweeted after the plane crash, "Stunt performer just crashed into a fireball at #pdk. No way pilot survived. Brutal."
Campbell said the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration were both on the scene and investigating.
The airport is about 11 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta.
