Passengers describe "petrifying" plane landing in Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. - Passengers aboard an American Airlines flight from Phoenix to Tampa, Florida, say they had a harrowing landing early Tuesday.

Florida station News Channel 8 Daytime host Jerry Penacoli was on board the plane that landed at Tampa International Airport. He told WFLA-TV flight attendants instructed passengers to brace as if the plane would crash upon landing.

Penacoli said the landing was “petrifying.” Passengers told the news station they were told the plane had a problem with its landing gear.

Airline spokeswoman Leslie Scott said in an email that maintenance crews were evaluating the aircraft “to see what exactly the issue was.”

CBS Tampa affiliate WTSP-TV reports AA flight 574 “experienced an indicator light in the cockpit prior to landing.”

Investigators are looking at the plane to see what may have triggered the alert.

There were 146 passengers on board. Scott said no one was injured.
