Parents arrested in death of Maryland boy, age 2

ROCKVILLE, Md. - The parents of a 2-year-old boy who died earlier this year in Maryland have been charged with murder and child abuse.

Montgomery County police said Thursday they have arrested 30-year-old Jonathan Navarrete-Turcious and 24-year-old Blanca Rosa Reyes of Wheaton.

Police say they were called to a Silver Spring hospital in February to investigate the death of the couple's son Matthew. Reyes told police she took her son to the hospital after she found him moaning and unable to support himself in his crib. The couple said their son had fallen several times at home and Reyes acknowledged striking him in the mouth as punishment.

The medical examiner's office ruled Matthew died of dehydration but also had a mouth injury and pneumonia.

Three other male children - ages 3, 4 and 5 - who lived with the couple have been placed in the custody of child protective services, reports CBS affiliate WUSA.

An online court record system did not list attorneys for the couple. The two are scheduled to appear in court on September 11.
