Convicted prep school grad registers as sex offender in Vermont

One-year sentence in New Hampshire prep school assault

MONTPELIER, Vt. -- A graduate of an elite New Hampshire prep school who was convicted of assaulting a 15-year-old classmate has registered as a sex offender in Vermont.

Owen Labrie was on the state's registry Tuesday.

Prosecutors tied the assault to a competition called "Senior Salute" in which seniors sought to have sex with underclassmen. Labrie was 18 at the time.

The now-20-year-old also was convicted of a felony count of using a computer to lure the girl, requiring him to register for life as a sex offender.

Labrie, from Tunbridge, Vermont, was sentenced to a year in jail and can petition to be removed from the sex offender list 15 years after he finishes his sentence. He remains free pending an appeal.
