One killed, five hurt when car smashes into California gym

LIVERMORE, Calif. -- Police say pedal confusion by an 80-year-old driver led to a fatal accident Tuesday morning at a California gym, where a car crashed through the doors of the building and into a fitness class, reports CBS San Francisco.

One person died and five were injured in the incident, which occurred shortly before 6:30 a.m.

Witnesses said the Mercedes SUV, which was driven by an 80-year-old woman, plowed through the glass doors of the LifeStyleRx gym in Livermore, Calif.

The woman was attempting to park the vehicle when she confused the gas and brake pedals and sent her car crashing forward into the gym, according to Livermore Officer Traci Rebiejo.

The six victims of the crash were transported to a hospital. A 49-year-old woman died from her injuries, and five people suffered moderate but not life-threatening injuries, according to police.

There were no signs of drug or alcohol involvement on the part of the driver, Officer Rebiejo said, and there've been no arrests or charges at this time.
