Student dies in Ohio State's iconic lake jump before big game

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State University says a man participating in an iconic lake jump before the Ohio-State Michigan football game died after going into cardiac arrest early Wednesday morning, CBS affiliate WBNS reports.

The man has been tentatively identified as a student, but officials are not releasing his name yet.

The jump was shut down shortly after the man was taken to the hospital.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the school said it will likely put an to end the annual Mirror Lake jump.

"In spite of significant efforts taken to make this event a safer one, this tragedy has occurred. We must come together and acknowledge that while this is a student-led tradition that has been passed down through the years, we cannot risk another tragedy. University leadership strongly agrees that we will work with our campus community to end this annual event."

Students annually jump into the lake on the Tuesday night before the two universities' football matchup, but the jump is not a university-sanctioned event.

The Ohio State-Michigan game will be played Saturday.
