Officials: Student shot himself in S.C. high school cafeteria
GREENVILLE, S.C. - A Greenville, S.C. high school was placed on lockdown Friday after a student accidentally shot himself inside the cafeteria, school officials say.
Greenville County Schools spokeswoman Elizabeth Brotherton confirmed the student was shot and wounded at Southside High School Friday morning. He was transported to a hospital and is "conscious and talking," Brotherton said.
The incident occurred around 8:40 a.m., reports CBS affiliate WSPA. The student's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, the station reports.
The school superintendent, several administrators, Greenville County Schools law enforcement and Greenville County deputies are responding, she said.
Southside High School and nearby Thomas E. Kerns Elementary School are on full lockdown. Two other elementary schools in the area were advised to go on partial lockdown, Brotherton said.
Parents were not being allowed to enter a perimeter set up around Southside High School.
All students are secure inside the building, the station reports.
